Lost in Listening

A lot of language learners complain that they have problems with listening. They say that very often they cannot even hear the words they know.

The most common mistake is that while listening, you are trying to hear the words without thinking together with the speaker in the language you are listening to.

Compare listening in your native language – you listen and think, sometimes speak together with the narrator, very often you know in advance what you will hear next.

The same listening strategy should be used with your second language.

When communicating we should connect our ideas in a logical way – otherwise it would be very difficult to understand each other.

Let’s take a story and see how we think along with the speaker and predict the ideas the narrator is intending to communicate.

b
“Helga is a (you expect to hear who or what she is) translator. She translates (texts, articles, books) books from (particular language) English into (language) Hungarian. Helga translates (how) perfectly. She likes (her job, the process) translating but she (something negative, does not like) hates (probably writing, speaking to the editor) typing.”

b
That is only the beginning of the story and you could have your ideas how to continue and finish the story, which will definitely help you understand much better when you listen to it.

Helga is a translator. She translates books from English into Hungarian. Helga translates perfectly. Helga likes translating but she hates typing. Helga never types her translations. She never writes her translations, either. Helga has a very good assistant. Helga dictates and her assistant types the texts into the computer. Helga doesn’t like the computer and the computer doesn’t like Helga. Whenever Helga tries to use the computer, it refuses to work. However, the computer never refuses to work for the assistant. They adore each other.

bWe believe that the more fluently you speak the language, the easier it is for you to listen and understand. Speaking fluently means thinking in the language and only thinking along with the narrator helps you follow his or her ideas.

So the earlier you start thinking in the target language, the faster you will develop your speaking, reading and listening skills.

We have created hundreds of special training drills that contain strong logical connections and make language learners think in the target language from the very first steps.

You can find fluency practice drills on our blogs and sites, in our applications for smart phones, tablet computers and PCs, and also in our books.

Have you ever thought how difficult it is to understand a text where there are no logical links between the sentences?

Listen to such a text and see it for yourself.

This text is a mixture of eight sentences from four different texts – the sentences are not connected in a logical way. Although the sentences are very simple, it will not be easy for you to understand the text.

You can then listen to the original, logically organized texts, where the sentences come from and see the difference.

Have you lost all hope to speak a foreign language?

Have you lost all hope to speak a foreign language? Have you tried out all the possible methods? Have you collected a home library of textbooks

I fully understand your state of mind, because I myself once experienced this bitter feeling of hopelessness, frustration and inferiority. I would like to bring you immediate relief, assuring you that you are in no way to blame. Moreover, we are absolutely convinced that in a short time you will be able to speak the target language fluently and we will show you how to do that.

A simple oral test will indicate how you have progressed in mastering the language, what stage you are at now and what you ought to do next. Before you start doing the test, you should understand what you are to concentrate your efforts on in the first place while learning a foreign language.

Most of us believe that the ability to speak fluently comes naturally, you just have to work hard and wait for the desired moment. And indeed, it does happen to quite a few lucky ones - after years of studying, they suddenly begin to speak, and there is no stopping, no turning back.

Unfortunately, many can not wait for this treasured day, they just give up. And some of them stop only a few steps from the magic line beyond which comes a new stage - fluent speech.

What is the most important thing in mastering a foreign language? What is a guarantee that anyone, even the most „incapable” language learner could start speaking? Having taught hundreds of the most „incapable” to speak the target language fluently, we have come to the conclusion that the most important of all is to learn to think in the language and try to speak it fluently from the very first steps.

If you have never learned how to think in the language, you should start a fluency practice training course immediately. Even if you have not done a special training course, you have already made some progress, since reading, listening comprehension, vocabulary and grammar exercises undoubtedly contribute to the development of speaking skills. In this regard, you will be very much interested to know to what extent you are fluent in the target language.

The idea of this test is very simple. If we take a native speaker and compare his skills with the speech skills of a language learner, the fluency rate can be expressed in percentage terms: native speaker - 100%, language learner - from 10% to 90%. How could that be measured in practice?

A native speaker tells an anecdote - another native speaker repeats this anecdote, and receives the highest score - 100%. One of the candidates for whom the language is foreign, but who has an excellent command of it, tells the same anecdote and gets a very high score - 90%. A third participant who speaks very slowly and makes numerous mistakes will receive the lowest score - 10%.

In our test we offer you a very simple text, even beginners will be able to memorise it. It takes a native speaker 35 seconds to say the text. Check your speech fluency: 40 seconds - 90%, 45 seconds - 80%, 50 seconds - 70%, etc. You can find the text for the test on YouTube «English (for beginners), one minute training 02 » https://www.youtube.com/OneMinuteTraining

If you are not satisfied with the result, we recommend that you go on working on one-minute training drills. If you manage to beat the native speaker, it will be your first, very important step in speech fluency. There is a special training program Black Jack Comes Back, which teaches to think and speak fluently in English and Russian. http://www.sapcrystals.com/BlackJackComesBack

We have also created hundreds of special fluency practice drills that help language learners of different levels think and speak in English and Russian. You can find the material based on the method in our books. http://www.amazon.com/Alexander-Pavlenko/Books

Save Time and Energy –
Learn to Speak and Think in the Language from the Very First Steps!

There is a widespread delusion among foreign language learners – you can start to think in the language and speak it automatically only much later when you have built up a substantial vocabulary and acquired all the necessary grammar rules.

That is only one of the ways to learn a foreign language. Moreover, it does not work for everyone – a lot of students have been learning a language for years and years without desired results.

Our idea is very simple – you should start to learn to think in the target language from the very beginning, from the very first steps.

The earlier you start to think in the language, the easier it will be for you to read, to understand native speakers, to learn grammar and new words.

Unfortunately, very few teachers make their students think in the language and there are scarcely any texts in modern language books that could help you develop thinking skills at elementary level.

We have been using Think First method for more than twenty years and have proved that we can teach to think and speak automatically anyone, including elderly people, dyslexic students and even language learners with minor mental disorders.

We have also created hundreds of special fluency practice drills that help language learners of different levels think and speak in English and Russian.

You can find the material based on the method in our books

and smartphone applications

IPS navigator for automatic spontaneous speech.

Anyone who speaks their native language, have their own IPS (Individual Prompting System) navigator. IPS is a system that allows spontaneous fluency in the language.

The main goal of a foreign language student should be to create his own IPS for the language. The IPS will guarantee spontaneous and fluent speech. Anyone fluent in their native language can learn to speak freely and fluently in a foreign language.

IPS navigator is a powerful self-contained system, operating in automatic mode. IPS instantly converts the speaker's thoughts and images into sentences; and while reading or listening to texts, IPS converts words and sentences into thoughts and images.

The only way to create an IPS is through a special system of training, allowing you to learn to think in a foreign language from the very first steps.

In order to initiate a new IPS, you should master a series of fluency practice drills.

You have to maintain the training texts in an active state, for they function as the working parts the newly born IPS engine.
The next important step is to teach your IPS navigator to assist you in speaking and thinking in the foreign language. Educating your IPS navigator requires patience and thoughtfulness.

A new series of training texts will enhance your IPS navigator and make it work, first in a semi-automatic, and later in automatic mode.

Why cannot adults learn a language exactly like a child?

The reason why adults cannot learn a foreign language exactly like a child lies in the reality that we, grown up people, already speak one language so well that this language prevents us from acquiring a new one in the same natural way as a child does.

To speak a language is to convert thoughts (ideas), images and feelings into words, phrases and sentences, and to understand someone speaking our language is to decode words, phrases and sentences into ideas, images and feelings. The process is automatic: the language with thousands of words, phrases, connectors is an ultimate system stored in our brain, in our subconscious, and we can only hold a limited number of objects in our conscious at a time when we are speaking.

In order to learn to think and to speak in a foreign language, we have to create a similar system, isolated from our native language, a new idea-sentence converter functioning automatically in our subconscious.

A person who thinks and speaks in several foreign languages never mixes them – each of the languages is isolated and he can communicate to several people switching from language to language in a fraction of a second.

The problem with an adult is that he starts learning a foreign language through his language and in fact thinks in his own language translating into the foreign language. As a result you can neither think in the foreign language nor speak the language fluently for a long time.

We have worked out a new method how to make an adult person think and speak in a foreign language from the very first steps. Using special training we can teach anyone to speak a target language automatically. The method works even for dyslexic students and for people with minor mental disorders.
